Reset a cable internet modem connection using Mac OS X 10.5

Problem

Your cable internet connection is down and you're using Mac OS X.

Solution: Reset it

  1. First check if unplugging the modem, waiting for 5 seconds and powering it up again helps. If you're also using a router, turn both router and modem off and on again, and wait until they are fully restarted again. This can take up to a few minutes, both for router and modem. It's best to turn off both at the same time and then power up the modem first. If you think it's just the router that is the problem, you can of course just restart that. If this doesn't help, move on to the next level:
  2. OS X Systeemvoorkeuren Netwerk
Turn off the connection of Mac OS X 10.5 in System Preferences, Network (as in the picture above, from the Dutch version). Select your connection (usually Ethernet 1 unless you're wirelessly connected via a wireless router, then choose Airpoirt). If you use a router, turn it off. Turn off the modem. Do it in this sequence.
  7. Ethernet weer actief maken in Mac OS X.
